#Event: The Bernie Grant Arts Centre Celebrates LGBT History Month!


The Bernie Grant Arts Centre Screening Lounge Celebrates LGBT History Month!

(11th – 28th of February)

With a view to celebrate BME art and culture; the Bernie Grant Arts Centre will showcase the great and the good of Black Queer Cinema, this will mark the first step in our commitment to LGBT Cinema at the centre. Each screening will be followed by a panel discussion with artists and experts, exploring the themes and historical context of each film. Panellists will be announced one by one, as part of our social media campaign, leading up to each screening.

The Programme Includes:

  • Before Night Falls, Julian Schnabel’s biopic of Cuban poet, novelist and playwright Reynaldo Arenas; based on the autobiography of the same name. 11th February, 19:30.

  • To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the original release; the beautiful and divisive masterpiece The Color Purple. 12th February, 19:30

  • Brother to Brother explores the parallels of what it was to be Black and Gay in the early 20th century with what it is to be a Gay Black Man today. 18th February 19:30

  • The Teddy Award winning documentary, Before Stonewall, Sheds light on what life was like for LGBTQ people before the 1969 stonewall riots. 20th February, 19:30.

  • Another Berlin Film Festival Teddy Award Winner 2012’s - Call Me Kuchu, spotlights David Kato Uganda’s LGBT great hope, a film about the birth of a movement. 25th February at 19:30

  • Isaac Julien’s feature film debut is a Soulboy/Punk thriller set in 1977’s Dalston. Young Soul Rebels is an exciting snapshot of 70’s London. Friday the 26th February at 19:30.

  • The Watermelon Woman - The debut feature film from world renowned filmmaker Cheryl Dunye. Written, Directed and starring Dunye herself. The film follows Cheryl as she investigates the life and career of a 1930’s black actress credited as simply “The Watermelon Woman”. 27th February 19:30.

  • Rent – Sing-a-long. The only Broadway musical to have Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender lead characters. The seminal rock opera will end our month with a fun afternoon of booze and karaoke. This post screening discussion will have a special focus on PrEP and living with HIV/Aids in 2016 and beyond. 28th February 16:00.
